Success and Improvement

  • Pupils coming to us are encouraged to undertake courses that provide them with accreditation for their personal skills whilst also working towards academic accreditation.

  • Pupils have the chance to work one to one with teachers and mentors and this gives them the time and the opportunity to complete GCSE courses and personal and life skills awards earlier than might otherwise be possible. Pupils are encouraged to undertake work based learning enabling them to successfully move on at the end of KS4.

  • To date, our pupils have successfully completed GCSE courses at the end of Year 10. Pupils at KS3 are also encouraged to complete the life skills and personal effectiveness accreditations which we find helps to motivate them towards successfully completing GCSE’s in Years 10 and 11.

  • Pupils are at the centre of what we do and we are always looking to improve pupils’ motivation and achievement. We are actively pursuing personalised learning for all pupils. This means that their timetables are relevant to them and their interests. We are constantly striving to widen the subject areas we are able to offer so that pupils coming to our school can be confident that they will be offered a variety of subjects and activities that they will find both interesting and motivating.

  • Pupils are assessed by teachers on an ongoing basis with formal assessment being undertaken at the end of each term. This shows teaching staff the areas that pupils are not only able to work on successfully but, also those areas on which they need to focus their planning and teaching, thereby giving pupils a greater opportunity for success. Regular assessment means that teaching and learning is focused on improving pupils’ skills and abilities leading to an overall improvement in results.

  • Pupils are assessed on entering the school using online assessment. They are also interviewed so that we are aware of their aims and interests. From this we are able to create a personalised timetable ensuring that teaching is focused on the individuals’ needs, interests and aspirations. Weekly evaluation meetings are also held between pupils and their mentors so that both successes and areas of concern can be highlighted. Following discussion, mutually agreed targets are set for pupils to aim for during the following week.
